EU PALMS is a 5-year small to medium scale collaborative project proposed to EU FP7 project. The project (full title: Palm harvest impacts in tropical forests) aims to explore the uses and trade in palm products in NW South America, a region with very high palm diversity and with high dependence among local populations on palms for food and materials. In a time of global change and unprecedented habitat destruction, the project will explore ecosystem resilience, sustainability, management and policy in the region, as well as completing baseline compendia of the uses and trade practices themselves. The project is co-ordinated by Prof. Henrik Balsev at the University of Aarhus, Denmark, who heads a team of plant scientists with specialisms in palms with which Kew has collaborated productively for many years. Nine other institutions are involved from Denmark, France, Spain, Germany, UK, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia.
